Melanated Classic Tarot

Melanated Classic Tarot - The Scarlet Sage Herb Co.

The Rider Waite Smith tarot deck, originally published in 1910, was illustrated by Pamela Colman-Smith. Although she is quoted as saying the project was "a very big job for very little cash," in the hundred-plus years since the deck was published, it has become the gold standard for tarot readers all over the world. It is by far the most popular tarot deck ever created and is considered the most basic and important unit of tarot reading to build upon.

Although the deck was meant to showcase universal archetypes to spark the subconscious mind of every man and woman regardless of race -- and although Colman-Smith was a bi-racial woman of color who spent her early life living in Jamaica, she was paid to draw scenes depicting only whites.

Oubria & Julia felt that it was time for the Rider Waite Smith tarot deck to be re-imagined, to reflect the images of the individuals Colman-Smith surely would have considered examples of classic, magical archetypes. Representation matters. Visual reparations matter. As new generations of melanated men and women turn toward tarot cards for guidance, spirituality, and entrepreneurship, its imperative they use tools that replenish their self-esteem, power & potential.
