IN-PERSON: Reclaiming Traditional Cooking with Fats with Shereel Washington - October 26th, 5:30-7:30pm PT
Misconceptions about fats in our diets have been circulating for far too long, and we’ve minimized this all-important source of nourishment. Low-fat diets, and diets too-low in saturated fats, have created a high number of health complications for us. It’s time we decolonize our diets by reclaiming this traditional ingredient and its preparation methods.
Reclaiming traditional foods is a way of nourishing ourselves on a deep level and restoring a cultural body of knowledge that we crave. We learn how to cook and combine foods to maximize their nutrition, assimilation, and deliciousness. Our bodies need fats to function optimally.
Traditional fats such as tallow from grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, ghee, or coconut oil offer nutritional benefits apart from oils made from nuts and seeds. They are rich in omegas and essential fatty acids, and offer a host of benefits: from brain health, hormone health, production of Vitamin D, assimilation of nutrients, liver + gallbladder support, and mood stability. Fats are also essential for maintaining a healthy menstrual cycle.
During this interactive class we’ll focus on traditional cooking and preparation methods to bring fats back into the diet.
What You’ll Experience:
- A history of animal fats and their cross-cultural uses
- A discussion of the nutritional value of different kinds of fats, their cooking methods, & practical uses
- Shereel will live demo how to make your own herbal-infused fats using supportive culinary herbs (like rosemary, sage, oregano, thyme) and nutritive herbs (like nettle, mullein, mugwort and lemon balm)… which is another great way to bring herbs into the diet
- Shereel will pass along her (seriously unmissable) recipe for collard greens
- And she’ll give you other cooking and preparation tips to incorporate fats into your daily recipes
By working with traditional foods like fats, we can change the narrative about how we eat. We can shift our mealtimes to acts of deep nourishment and self-care.
Vegans and vegetarians are also welcome, as Shereel will discuss alternatives using ghee and coconut oil.
Supplies to Bring:
- A notebook & pen
